Who is Amy Rowlings?
Amy Rowlings is a vivacious, independent, quick-witted collector of imported American music, a movie buff, a buyer of nearly new fashion and an avid reader of crime fiction. Unlike many of the amateur sleuths of the era, Amy is a working-class, twenty-one-year-old who works at a clothing factory known locally as The Mill. She is a huge fan of Agatha Christie books, particularly those involving Hercules Poirot. Amy even uses Poirot’s techniques to help solve the murders she helps to investigate.
Bodkin is twenty-nine years old and relatively new to Spinton having moved to the town from Gillingham a few weeks before meeting Amy. Bodkin is a rugged, no-nonsense, untidy-looking detective who would look scruffy in a tailormade suit. His mantra is, that everyone is a suspect until they aren’t.
Alice has been Amy’s best friend since childhood. Like Amy, she is an independent-minded woman, a proud single parent at a time when society looked down on unmarried mothers. Following the death of her parents, Alice found herself running a productive 100-acre farm at the tender age of eighteen.
Stunningly attractive, Alice turned down an offer of marriage from the father of her child because she feared she would lose control of her family farm.
Constable Ferris works at the front desk at the police station. He is a talented singer and performs at the Milton Hotel with a jazz band. He accompanies Amy, Alice and Bodkin to the cinema every Saturday night.
